Day Fire at Whiskey Bay

One of the sunniest notes in my summer songbook is a good campfire. But oh, an all-day campfire? Now that's a real, crackling tune. My dance with the flames begins by wandering the woods, a forest floor scavenger in search of fallen branches, whispers of brush, and patient sticks. I relish the hunt for wood for my campfire. Like a busy squirrel, I tuck these treasures away in strategic little piles behind our "camp"—which, in our neck of the woods (Northern Ontario), people from Southern Ontarians playfully call the cottage. Yes, there's electricity, stoves, fridges, and other modern conveniences!
My nieces and nephews are well-rehearsed in this whimsical ballet. They know the dance and swoop in on cue, arms laden with these pre-stashed piles of starter wood to spark the forest-magic into life.
Of course, our fiery dance card has been a little less full lately, humbled by some truly fierce fire-fellows blazing across the province. For a stretch, all of Ontario was blanketed in a heavy, somber smoke-shawl.
There's such a spell spun around a campfire. It's a spark-lit stage for the warmest conversations and a canvas for the mesmerizing, hypnotic performance of the flames themselves. It becomes a hands-on, hearts-on experience as we artfully nudge a log here, a handful of brush there—feeding and tending to this deep-rooted camping tradition.
Naturally, this fiery muse has painted quite a few canvases in my mind and with my brush. But this one? It's a whimsical, graphic symphony, symbolizing a whole lifetime of love for this most enchanting camp tradition; this is called Day Fire on Whiskey Bay.
